Staff at Syngenta in Huddersfield normally get together as a group annually to celebrate and recognise their achievements but for the second year now, they chose to gift away £12,500 to five charities. Staff usually celebrate in a privately hired function room along with a meal and live entertainment at one of the local hotel venues.However, employees were not able to come together and celebrate their success again this year, following COVID protocols and taking a cautious approach to minimise the risk of spreading the disease at social gatherings.Site Staff Reps sought opinions from the workforce who made a generous offer to local charities. Employees were offered a choice of either a £50 gift voucher or to donate their award instead to one of five charities: The Welcome Centre Food Bank and More; Ruddi’s Retreat, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Andy’s Man Club and RNLI. Helping to support Covid-19 Community Volunteer Response with Hand Sanitizer DonationA donation of 500 pint sized bottles of hand sanitizer were despatched out to COVID-19 volunteer support services by Syngenta in Huddersfield. The 250 litre batch was distributed to Community Leaders in the local area, who are leading the welfare and care support for those residents and community centres in short supply. Bottles were also donated to the COVID-19 Volunteer Response Network via the Authorities COVID-19 Huddersfield Response Team.The donation of hand sanitizer is being distributed by Community Volunteer Response Teams to those most in need. The hand sanitizer shall be provided to volunteers helping with activities such delivering food, topping up meter cards, grocery shopping and dog walking as well as being provided to community services.Thanks are extended to R&D Products UK Ltd for assisting with supply.

Community Groups and local businesses came together to share stories, network and seek out ways to do good in our Kirklees Community at the 8th annual Connecting Communities Fair held at Syngenta premises in Huddersfield.The annual event aims to bring together local good causes and Syngenta staff, with a view to maximising use of its Syngenta Employees Community Gift scheme – a fund where staff make contributions from wages to help local community groups with their projects.For the third year in succession, a number of local business representatives were invited to participate through a collaboration with Volunteering Kirklees. Staff at Syngenta in Huddersfield collected 100 toys for local children in their recent Christmas Toy Appeal.Each year, staff make donations to the toy appeal in support of local children. This year, toys were distributed through community groups based at the Dalton Library and Information Centre and the Chestnut Centre in Ashbrow. The annual toy appeal is run by the Syngenta Employees Community Gift team who spent some time wrapping presents and labelling them, identifying which toys were suitable for which children. Chairperson of the Fund, Karen Fallows said "It's something we do every year and we make sure the toys are properly labelled and supplied with batteries if they need them. It's important to us that every child opening their present on Christmas Day has a little something which they enjoy. In some cases, it may be the only present that they get."

Syngenta laid on free transport for schools through local coach company Stotts, an experienced operator in running transport operations for Kirklees schools.The firm contacted 13 neighbouring primary schools and offered out 400 tickets to the pantomime Sleeping Beauty, showing at the Lawrence Batley Theatre throughout December until 5th January 2020. Almost 1,000 students and 18 different Kirklees schools have now passed through the Community Science Labs at Syngenta in Huddersfield.Staffed by employees at the site and supported by students from Kirklees College, the Labs have opened 47 times since their creation two years ago with the aim of inspiring young people in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).During the visit, we share information about Syngenta's important role in agriculture and our sustainability programme known as the Good Growth Plan. We provide a series of Lab based experiments around distillation and filtration and we also offer a tour of a production facility during the visit.To see a video of the Labs in action, see below.

When Syngenta became part of the Chemchina family in 2017, the Huddersfield Site sought out ways in which they could appreciate and understand Chinese culture better, with the aim of being equipped for supporting the global business. Through local relationships with the University of Huddersfield, the site invited Dr Qing Shan Ding to talk to Syngenta staff about Chinese culture.From China, Dr Ding is a Senior lecture in Marketing at the University of Huddersfield with expertise in Country of Origin; Consumer Ethnocentrism; Consumer Animosity; Market Entry Strategies; Consumer Perception and Brands in Emerging Economies. He came to the UK in 2002.Dr Ding gave an insightful lecture to staff on topics such as Education, Family, Social Relationships and Business Etiquette in China, amongst other subjects. He gave his view of where Chinese culture may differ from British culture in areas such as Religion, Law and Governance but concluded that actually, there is far more in common between the two cultures than we…

Syngenta in Huddersfield has been recognised in the prestigious Centrica Top 100 Apprentice Employer List, which is compiled annually by the National Apprenticeship Service and recognises excellence in businesses that employ apprentices.

In March, Syngenta is set to open up its Community Science lab in Huddersfield to local secondary schools for National Science Week.
